Valheim's narrative centers on fallen Vikings proving their worth for Valhalla by defeating evils across distinct biomes. The Queen is situated in the Mistlands, a biome characterized by unique enemies and items that increase survival difficulty. To summon her, players must travel to her own boss altar and offer a set of required items, adhering to the game's core boss mechanics established since early access. Upon defeat, she drops a collectable trophy. This trophy is not merely a souvenir; it can be placed at the Mystical Altar in the Mistlands to unlock 'Queen's Power', a special power-up that is usable infinitely but requires a brief cooldown between uses. Players may only carry one active power-up at a time, forcing them to revisit the Mystical Altar to switch effects if desired.

The path to the Queen begins with the 'Mistlands' update in December 2022, which added this new biome along with neutral non-player characters, random events, and a new magic system. The Queen serves as the culmination of the six main bosses encountered so far. Her introduction coincided with the addition of four magic weapons and various crafting stations to aid players in the fight. When summoned via her altar, she joins the roster of enemies that include unique creatures found only in the Mistlands. Defeating her is a critical step in the journey led by instincts and hints from a raven, guiding the player against the sworn enemies of Odin. Her existence expands the lore of Valheim's ten worlds within Yggdrasil, adding depth to the struggle for survival.

Players must prepare for the Queen using the magic system expanded in December 2022, which includes four new magic weapons alongside traditional one- and two-handed options like spears and bows. Since combat drains stamina during actions like running and attacking, managing food is vital; different foods increase health, stamina, or Eitr (used for magic items) and boost regeneration rates. The Queen's fight requires skill management, as skills range from blocking to running and can be leveled up to 100.
